# 一道翻译题

> They are the possessions of the autonomous（self-governing）man of traditional theory, and they are essential to practices in which a person is held responsible for his conduct and given credit for his achievements.

如果这是一篇阅读理解里的句子。

**第一件事**是要搞清楚代词“**they**”的指代，这句话在文中的前一句是“Freedom and dignity illustrate the difficulty.”很明显，这里的“they”是复数，指代的是“freedom and dignity”。

**第二件事**是把句子读短，分析句子结构。整个句子是一个由“and”连接的并列句。

第一个并列句的主干是They are the possessions of……（一个简单的主系表结构，主语是they ，表语中心词是the possessions） 而 of the autonomous（self-governing）man of traditional theory作为介词短语修饰表语中心词 ；第二个并列句的主干是they are essential to practices……（这没什么可分析的），in which a person is held responsible for his conduct and given credit for his achievements.是一个由which引导的定语从句，先行词是practice。

定语从句的主语是a person ,需要说明的是这个定语从句有两个并列谓语，如果拆开成两句就是in which a person is held responsible for his conduct；in which a person is given credit for his achievements.

如果脱了衣服看本质，这句话就是“They are the possessions of …A… ，and they are essential to practices…B…”（他们是A的财产，是B实践所必须的）。

注意：如果是四六级考试，学会把一篇很长的文章读短并且提炼出骨干，多半题目就做出来了。但是考研没有这么easy，如果这句话是一个命题点的话，也必须要把修饰部分搞清楚，题目中很可能出一个错误选项“他们是C的财产”。

另外，这句话在当年是一道翻译题目，把possessions翻译成财产其实是不好的，这其中涉及到了“名词动词话”的问题，后面再谈。

既然现在这是翻译题，我们就得尝试着把该说的说清楚。

* autonomous：adj 自主的，自治的 Autonomous region自治区。命题人就是怕你不认识这个单词，紧接着括号里给你来了一个self-governing (自我管理)。
* be essential to: 必备短语 对……是重要的/根本的
* responsible：adj 负责的，可依赖的 常用短语有：hold/make responsible for(对……负责) 先翻译前半句话

**They are the possessions of the autonomous（self-governing）man of traditional theory,**一般情况下，有介词短语后置是，后面的内容都要放在中心词的前面。比如A of B of C.根据其修饰关系通常会翻译为“C的B的A”。

在这里traditional theory（传统理论）修饰the autonomous（self-governing）man（自主人），they在这里既指前面的Freedom and dignity（自由和尊严），又是后面的possessions。

possessions是一个名词，指财产。这样前半句话可以翻译为“自由和尊严是传统理论定义的自主人的财产”。可是如果说人话，请你完成这个填空：**人*****\_\_*****自由和尊严**，肯定会想到“拥有"。那么最终前半句话就可以翻译为“自由和尊严是传统理论定义的自主人所拥有的”。（将名词“财产”动词化为“拥有”，使得翻译更加准确。）

再来翻译后半句

主干部分**they are essential to practices……**可以翻译为“它们是实践中所必不可少的”。

定语从句的前半句in which a person is held responsible for his conduct可以翻译为“在实践活动中，一个人应该对自己的行为负责”；后半句（a person is ） given credit for his achievements可以翻译为“因为他的成就而获得肯定”，定语从句整合起来就是“在实践活动中，一个人应该对自己的行为负责，并且因其成就而获得肯定。”。

最后我们还要把从句前面的主干加进来，整个后半句话就是“它们是实践中所必不可少的，在这类实践中，一个人应该对自己的行为负责并且因其成就而获得肯定。”这个答案已经对了，但是读起来略显罗嗦，如果你语文水平还可以，变成人话就是“**它们是要求一个人对自己的行为负责并因其成就而获得肯定的必要前提。**”

现在整句话就翻译好了。

> “自由和尊严是传统理论定义的自主人所拥有的，是要求一个人对自己的行为负责并因其成就而获得肯定的必要前提。
